week 8 night flying

Finally...I went night flying together with Robert Bos and two other Portuguese students at Seville for two days. Our Instructor was Angel Martin. The new hotel in the centre of Seville was pretty nice. The days where long but.....night flying is great!

Cruise at F080 just above the clouds during sunset gave spectacular views.

We had a pretty strong tailwind. Angel looked up in the GPS what the highest recorded groundspeed was for our aircraft. It seemed to be 203 knots. Because we were already doing around 180 knots during cruise we decided to set a new record during cruise descent...218 knots!

Seville at night.

Robert could also do a day trip. I couldn't because I simply didn't have the hours left to do it. Finals at Granada runway 09. Mountains with snow on the tops. The highest MSA (Minimum Sector Altitude) is 13,400 ft for Granada.

Finals at Seville runway 27...a few minutes before sunset.

Flaring is more difficult because of lack of reference and illusions that can occur. But we were briefed about that before we left Evora and it's also a part of Human Performance and Limitations during the ground coarse at beek.

The return trip back to Evora...everyone is waiting it's turn.

I did 3:50 and made 6 landings during those 2 days. This week I will go for one night to make the last 2:10 to finish.

See you next week,
Bas

week 7 simulator

Only 3 simulator sessions this week. 4 colleagues went night flying to Seville, Jerez and Malaga. That's the reason that I didn't fly. The CFI told me that I will go on Tuesday and hopefully we stay away for 2 day's!

The sim sessions went fine. I'm almost finished with those and on schedule for the IF check.

Went to Lisbon last Sunday with a group for shopping. This is Marcel, Peter, Jose and myself in one of Lisbon's underground stations

week 6 carnival

Monday and Tuesday the school was closed due to carnival. We went out on Monday evening to get a taste of Portuguese carnival. On Wednesday I had a 2:30 hour flight to Faro again, were I did 2 ILS approaches and 1 NDB. Last Thursday I was not scheduled to fly. On Friday I was copilot for Reyndert and Leon and had one sim session myself. On all sessions we had a lot of emergencies.

I have now 6 hours of night flying to do, 8 hours of sim and 3:40 left for exam training before I can do my IF check. Next week I will do a lot of simulator and will probably go night flying...finally!

This week the construction of the long awaited NDB finally finished. Reyndert and I went to the construction site to take some pictures and speak with the guys building it. It's identification will be EVR and it's frequency 425 kHz. At the moment it's morse code is TST _ ... _ (test) which is the identification until the beacon is calibrated. The constructor who also installed both ILS systems at Lisbon airport, said that all new working navaids have this identification until they become operational.

Myself near the NDB.

Oh yes...I almost to forget tell you about the muuuuvie (that's how the English call it) I was participating in. Our Student councilor asked me if I liked to play her husband. We were only needed in a few scene's and a photo shooting. Although we had to wait a lot between the takes it was really nice!

Bas

week 5 lisbon, faro and beja

A little bit of everything this week!
3 weeks ago I met a girl from Rio de Janeiro in Evora. She was on a 3 weeks holiday travelling trough Portugal and Spain. We kept in touch via email and when she was in Lisbon again, waiting for her return flight back to Rio, I went to visit her. It was a really nice day!

On wednesday I had a flight together with Fabian. He flew from Evora to Faro for 2 approaches and continued to Portimao where we changed seats. I did only one ILS approach with limited panel at Faro.

On Thursday I went to Beja and did a high speed (150 kias) straight in ILS approach followed by two NDB approaches. New was the fact that I had to use the flight director for the entire duration of the flight.

On friday we had arranged a large party for the new NLS 0405 class.

Missed approach at Faro (LPFR)

VFA or Faro VOR is a doppler type VOR. For the aircraft equipment it doesn't matter if the station is conventional (recognisable by a large cone on top of the station) or doppler.

After flown 1000 AGL over the coastline to Portimao we proceeded for a straight in approach. The runway is only 900 meter and has a hill just in front of it, that's why we have the displaced threshold.

Preparing the return trip to back to Evora via Faro.

I'm also participating in a movie which is being made by the university of Wales....but more about that next week ;-)

That's all for now. Take care,
Bas
